Support Program for the Rohingya Fire Victims – 2024
Project Background & Humanitarian Crisis
When a devastating fire swept through Camp No. 5 of the Rohingya Refugee Camp in January 2024, over a thousand fragile shelters were reduced to ashes within hours. Thousands of families—already displaced from their homeland—found themselves homeless once again, facing hunger, cold nights, and despair. The cries of children, the sight of smoke covering the sky, and the fear among the elderly painted a heartbreaking picture of loss. Yet, amidst the devastation, there was courage and solidarity. Families gathered in open spaces, holding onto one another, waiting for help to arrive. In that critical moment, Jano Seba Kendra (JSK), supported by Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD), USA, acted immediately to stand beside them. Within days, JSK teams were on the ground distributing cooked meals, dry food, mosquito nets, sleeping mats, and emergency clothing, helping the most vulnerable regain their footing and dignity. For families like Jobeda’s, it marked the beginning of recovery and renewal.
“We lost everything that night. The mosquito net and dry food from JSK gave us comfort and hope again.”
— Jobeda Begum, Fire Victim, Camp-5
